WELCOME TO MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH
School Year 2019 - 2020
Dear Middle School Students and Parents,
Welcome to a new year in mathematics! This is going to be a great year for both you and me. I would like to take this time to give a brief explanation of my grading policy and provide a list of necessary supplies.
Grading Policy: Can be found on the tab above
List of Supplies: Can be found on the tab above
Mathematics Content Standards: Can be found on the "More" tab above
The 6th graders will be using the Pearson Envision Math 2.0 series for 6th grade. The 7th graders will be using the Prentice-Hall Pre-Algebra series and the 8th graders will be using the Prentice-Hall Algebra I, California Edition series. These textbooks are aligned with the California State Math Standards and should present challenging mathematical opportunities for everyone that will provide strong foundational skills, and therefore prepare them for high school level Algebra H and Geometry. CCSSM Standards are also being met for 6th grade. The 7th grade Pre-Algebra and 8th grade Algebra 1 curriculum is set above the CCSSM Standards for those grades as the St. John Eudes Math program is accelerating those students who demonstrate readiness in handling a more rigorous program.
This year, grades 6, 7, & 8 will be broken up into two groups: Accelerated and Regular. Having smaller classes in these two grades will be beneficial for everyone. The 7th grade Accelerated program condenses the 7th grade and 8th grade standards into one year preparing them to move into the Algebra 1 curriculum in 8th grade. Most of these students will be ready for Algebra 1 Honors or Geometry when they enter high school. The 7th and 8th grade Regular program will cover their grade appropriate standards, thereby allowing students the time needed to understand and master the material. These students will be ready for Algebra 1 in high school. The teachers will be:
6th Regular - Ms. Niemiec / 6th Accelerated - Mrs. Strom
7th Regular - Ms. Niemiec / 7th Accelerated - Mrs. Strom
8th Regular - Ms. Niemiec / 8th Accelerated - Mrs. Strom
Mrs. Strom will offer Math lab weekly as an opportunity for students demonstrating difficulty at particular times to come into the St. John Eudes classroom (6th Grade) during lunch time. Math Lab has been assigned to 8th grade on Tuesdays, 7th grade on Wednesdays, and 6th grade on Thursdays. The school also has an after-school tutoring program that is free of charge, for students that are struggling. Tutoring will be provided to those students who are most at-risk, first.
I am looking forward to a great year with the middle school students. If any questions should ever arise, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail at [email protected] or by leaving a message in the school office. Thank you, in advance, for your continued support.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Strom
